Trees and Mountain Stream by William Louis Sonntag, NA (1822-1900), oil on board, 11 1/2″ x 9 1/2″, signed lower left.
Medium: Oil on board
A Hudson River artist, with neo-classical interests, William Louis Sonntag preferred wilderness landscapes, often allegorical in nature. “A native of Pennsylvania, Sonntag resided in the mid-Atlantic states (Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania). Sonntag's work gained popularity because of their positive reception in the Western Art Union shows. In 1853, he first traveled in Europe, and returned in 1855 for a year's study in Florence, Italy. He settled in New York City. His style of grandeur, sweeping vistas, and dramatic renderings was much influenced by Thomas Cole. In 1861, he became an associate member of the National Academy of Design and exhibited his work regularly there for the next 40 years. This little painting was a gift to his granddaughter about two years before his death, and remained unframed and unvarnished until the Best Collection acquired it in 2009.
