The Grand Canyon of Arizona ca. 1905 by Lucien W. Powell (1846-1930), oil on canvas, 24″ x 36″, signed lower right.
Medium: Oil on canvas
After the conclusion of the Civil War, in which he participated, Powell left Virginia for Philadelphia where he studied with Thomas Moran. Like his teacher, Powell greatly admired the British marine painter J.M.W. Turner with his dynamic effects and use of luminous colors. This influence is evident in the painting titled "Grand Canyon of Arizona." Powell was a member of the Society of Washington Artists.
