In his own words, Abraham Walkowitz said, "I was born in Siberia. The same place where Irving Berlin was (born)." Working in the company of Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and John Marin (often known as "The Stieglitz Quartet"), Walkowitz was at the center of the modernist movement. Exhibiting frequently at Alfred Stieglitz's 291 Gallery, Walkowitz was captivated by famed expressionist dancer Isadora Duncan and her freeform movements. He produced over 5,000 drawings of her, including "Dancer in Red." Signed lower center. Inscribed lower left with; "In Appreciation of your devotion of 25 years to the Art School of the Educational Alliance, Abraham Walkowitz".
