The Waterfall by Conrad Buff (1886-1975), oil on canvas, 26″ x 33 1/2″, signed lower right.
Medium: Oil on canvas
Swiss born, Buff came to America in the early twentieth century. He worked a number of menial jobs in the Midwest and painted in his spare time to alleviate boredom. He finally settled in California and became part of an active artistic community that included Maynard Dixon and Edgar Payne. He employed strong earth tones, applied with broad brushstrokes, creating realistic scenes of the American Southwest. Whimsical touches are often applied that add a story-like character to the work.
