Evening in Gstaad by William S Horton (1865-1936), pastel on paper, 18″ x 24 1/2″, signed lower right.
Medium: Pastel on paper
Horton's career spanned one of the most investigative and varied times in art. It covered the strictures of the Academic school, through impressionism, post-impressionism, fauvism, expressionism, cubism and ending at the beginning of abstraction. Horton absorbed all these "isms" and developed his own rich, decorative style. He exhibited at most of the prestigious venues in Paris and New York. After World War I, he made many trips to Gstaad, where he would pack his painting gear and ski to good painting spots.
