Mountain in Pink Light by Arthur William Best (1859-1935), oil on canvas, 18″ x 20″, signed lower right.
Medium: Oil on canvas
Arthur Best settled in Portland Oregon in 1887. He immigrated from Canada with his brother hoping to pursue a musical career. The Oregon landscape was so appealing that Best took up a paint brush and changed his career path to painting. He studied in San Francisco and continued to develop professionally. He became one of the more prominent early twentieth century California painters. He and his wife, Alice, also an artist, established the Best Art School in San Francisco. His work attracted the attention of the Southern Pacific Railroad and he was commissioned to paint travel publicity. Among the works were scenes of the Grand Canyon, Sierra Nevada and the Arizona desert. His works can be found in major Western museums and in prestigious private collections.
