Seated Lady by Robert Henri (1865-1929), ink on paper, 15 1/2″ x 12 1/2″, signed lower right.
One of the founders of the Ashcan School, Henri was a noted portraitist and teacher. He was associated with all of the major American artists of his time some of whom had been his students. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy, the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Julian. This strong foundation gave him the confidence to develop a style that exhibits great strength and physicality.
