The Caravan by Lee Fritz Randolph (1860-1956), oil on canvas, 11 1/2″ x 9″, signed lower left.
Lee Fritz Randolph was primarily known for his California Impressionist landscapes and portraits. Born in 1880 in Ravenna, Ohio he trained at Stevenson Art School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and later studied at the Cincinnati Arts Academy. In New York City, Randolph attended the Art Students League. After 10 years of studying in Europe, spending time in Paris and Rome (where he undoubtedly painted this picture), he settled in California in 1913. He became a member of the Bohemian Club and the California Society of Etchers. IN 1917, he became the director of the California School of Fine Arts (San Francisco), a position that he held for 25 years. Randolph continued to paint and was active in the Carmel art scene following his retirement from teaching.
