The Birthday Party, Helen Velasquez Chase circa 1902 by William Merrit Chase (1849-1916), oil on canvas, 26″ x 21 1/2″, signed lower left.
Born in Indiana in 1849, William Merritt Chase dabbled in several scattered professions before settling on an artistic career. While in St. Louis, Chase caught the eye of several affluent businessmen who offered to finance his studies in Europe in exchange for his art and connections. Once there, Chase spent time in Munich, refining his style and earning acclaim as a skilled impressionist painter. He excelled at simultaneously incorporating both the traditional elements of chiaroscuro and portraiture, emulating the talent of masters like Velazquez, and the impressionist elements of loose brushstrokes and dynamic poses, emulating the talent of contemporaries like Sargent.
