Breaking Seas by Frederick Judah Waugh (1861-1940), oil on canvas, 29 1/2″ x 39″, signed lower right.
Considered to be one of the greatest marine painters, Frederick Judd Waugh led a long and prolific career during which he completed nearly 2,500 paintings.
Born into an artistic family, Waugh’s childhood was surrounded by his mother’s miniature portraits, his sister’s children’s book illustrations, and his father, Samuel Waugh’s, renowned and diverse portfolio. The latter was best known for his portraits, as evinced through his commissions to paint President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant. At 18 years old, Frederick Waugh debuted his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before moving to Paris, where he studied at the L’Academie Julien under Robert Fleury and William Bouguereau.
It was not until he moved to the Channel Island of Stark with his wife, Clara, however, that his career blossomed. This seaside home became the inspiration of his later work, shaped by the sweeping coastal waves which would rise up to 60 feet during particularly turbulent weather.
