Landscape by Alexander Wyant, NA (1836-1892), oil on canvas, 8 1/2″ x 12″, signed lower left.
Medium: Oil on canvas
The artist started his artistic career as a limner and sign painted but, after seeing works by Inness and later paintings of the Dusseldorf School, the young artist resolved to hone his craft and study abroad. A stop in England and exposure to Constable's paintings set in motion a career that produced some of America's greatest landscapes. He can be compared favorably to the artists of the Barbizon and Hudson River Schools and the finest British landscape painters. He was elected a full member of the National Academy in 1870. His works can be found in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, the Los Angeles Museum of Art and many more.
