Sailboat on the Lake by Sarah/ Susan M. Barstow (1836-1927), oil on academy board, 4″ x 7″, unsigned.
Sarah Barstow was a prolific New York painter, active in the last half of the nineteenth century. In the earliest part of her career she exhibited both still-life and landscape paintings. She then turned almost exclusively to landscapes, seeking out mountainous regons in the Northeast, such as the Ctaskills, the Adirondacks, and the White Mountains. Her work, circo 1860, shows the influence of the Hudson River School.
