Venetian Canal by George William Sotter (1879-1953), oil on canvas, 7″ x 4 3/4″, signed lower left.
Born in Pitsburgh, PA., Sotter painted the rivers and mills there. He came to Bucks County, PA. in 1902 to study with Edward Redfield, the premier painter of the New Hope School. Sotter's paintings of nocturnal, snowbound houses sell for high prices. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, and studied there with Willian Merritt Chase, Thomas Anschutz, and Henry Keller. In 1907, he married Alice Barnett and the couple had an extended wedding trip abroad where they studied and painted throughout Europe. The painting, Venetian Canal was undoubtedly done during this trip. In addition to painting, Sotter was a master craftsman in stained glass windows and earned a national reputation for making windows for churches and monasteries.
