Murano chandeliers are made according to the 1000 years old glass making tradition in the island of Murano, in the lagoon of Venice, Italy. It is the Murano glass artists’ vision and dedication to the ancient art of glass making that allows them to transform simple silica sand into one of a kind precious jewel that marvel customers from all points of the globe. These Venetian glass chandeliers create a symphony for eyes that you will not forget! Each chandelier is a handmade unique masterpiece provided with certificate of authenticity demonstrating that the chandelier was made in Murano, Italy.
Our chandelier came to us from A.V. Ristorante Italiano formerly on New York Avenue, Washington D.C. Peter Colasante was a regular and a friend for many years.
The family run Italian restaurant closed in 2007 shortly after its founder Asunta Vasaio passed away. By that time, the property had become a valuable piece of real estate and now features a tower block of generic offices.
Augusto Vasaio (1908-1982) founded this historic restaurant at 607 New York Avenue NW in 1949 with his wife, Asunta (1923-2005). Brother Franco Vasaio (1910-1980) joined them the following year and became their chef.
Food critic Donald Dresden wrote @washingtonpost in 1975 that “A.V's was a neighborhood place, where the owner was friendly but at times brusque and the wait was painfully slow but the food delicious and comforting. Informality and indifference characterize the restaurant's ambience…. Empty wine bottles are the main decoration... A large mirror has remained hanging cockeyed for several days at this writing, but no one seems to mind this or an accumulation of cigarette butts and ashes on a window sill."
On July 26, 2007, @washtimes reported that the 58-year-old restaurant had been sold to make way for development. “It’s emotional,” said Mr. Vasaio, who has been running the restaurant with his brother, John, since their father died. “We weren’t looking to close, but we got an offer we couldn’t refuse.”
